Week 2 (Oct. 4, 2023): Introduction to the Law; Wire Fraud

This class will require you to read a lot of statutes and court opinions (mostly federal rather than state), which are written in a specialized and often inaccessible style and language that can be daunting at first. Here's a crash course in learning how to read. We'll study the federal wire fraud statute, which is commonly charged in hacking cases, to get acclimated to reading federal statutes. We'll also read an early example of a criminal case against hackers, specifically, two "phone phreaks."
