Organizing: AALDEF's Voting Rights & Democracy Program
The Asian American Legal Defense Fund, modeled after the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (Thurgood Marshall's litigation arm responsible for Brown v. Board of Education), is an advocacy, education, and litigation organization that addresses everything from hate violence and immigrant rights to education, employment, housing, environmental justice, and voting rights. Their programs are just one example of the range of on-the-ground work underway across the country.
It is just one of many U.S.-based organizations address various issues of concern to AAPIs or subgroups, like our local Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAAJ)-Asian Law Caucus. Some, like Chinese for Affirmative Action grew out of the broader civil rights movement of the 1960s or were responses to a particular event or injustice, e.g., the Free Chol Soo Lee Defense Committee. Some connect Americans based on a shared national origin, particular issue, or vocation.
The directories of the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans, founded in 2020 is a useful start in connecting with others.
