Chae Chan Ping v. United States (1889)

The Chae Chan Ping decision was preceded by the passage of "The Scott Act," an 1888 United States Law that prohibited U.S. resident Chinese laborers, from returning to the United States. As you read, keep in mind that the case immediately prior, Chy Lung v. Freeman kept the power of immigration laws in the hands of Congress, and consider whether the opinion below was one of the intended outcomes of that decision given the anti-Chinese attitudes in nineteenth-century California.
