International Law Class 7: Statehood and Territory

In this class, we consider the legal treatment of statehood and territory under international law. What does it mean to be a state? When and how are new states recognized? How does international law grapple with the problem of disputed territory? We then examine some of these issues through the lens of the current dispute over Ukraine, as well as the debate over Kosovo and the ICJ's advisory opinion on Kosovo. What are the strongest arguments in support of the legality of Russia’s actions? What are the strongest arguments that Russia’s actions are illegal under international law?
