Intro to US Legal system week 3 (week of April 11 to April 15)

The readings for Monday are:a) Fletcher and Sheppard, chapter 7 b) Fletcher and Sheppard pp. 277-278 (the opening pages of Chapter 13, up to the introduction to the Pennoyer case). Note: this is primarily just for orientation to some of the core questions about coordination between states; answers as to how the system resolves them will come through the class lecture and discussion.c) Fletcher and Sheppard chapter 14.The readings for Thursday are:  -- Continue with Chapter 14-- Optional, but we will discuss it, and if you have time you may find it interesting to have read in advance, is Wickard v. Filburn, available online at https://h2o.law.harvard.edu/playlists/27300 in an edited version adapted from Prof. Lawrence Lessig's edits. This is a famous 1940s case in which the Court considered whether the Commerce Clause in the Constitution's article 8 that we looked at briefly yesterday -- the one allowing Congress to regulate interstate commerce -- can be interpreted to allow Congress to pass a law preventing a farmer from feeding wheat he has grown on his own farm to his own cows.Prof. Davis's powerpoints are available on the class LU website under Class Materials.
