Civil Rights Cases
In 1875, right before the Republicans lost control of the House, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1875, forbidding discrimination on the basis of race in railroad cars, inns, and places of public amusement. These cases challenge the constitutionality of the act's prohibition of race discrimination in the places.
